All about Molluscum Treatment

Overview

Molluscum contagiosum is a unique skin infection. It causes small round bumps which are in the color of your flesh. The bumps are very evident as the center is indented. This skin infection is caused by a virus which is not harmful. However the virus spreads very easily through contact of skin. Simple touching of bumps and touching your skin is sufficient for the virus to spread. It can spread from one part of the body to another or other people altogether. These bumps are not painful but may appear alone or in clusters. The most prone areas include the neck, eyes, armpits, face, or the genital areas.

Treatment

For those who have a good immune system, no treatment is required. The bumps disappear automatically over a period of time in such people. While on the other hand for people who do not want the virus to spread and want it removed immediately there are a few advisable treatments. Doctors always advise treatment for the bumps in the genital area to prevent them from spreading and making the infection worse. The treatment choices include freezing the bumps also known as cryosurgery, scrapping the bumps off the skin otherwise known as curettage, spraying the bump with some chemical to kill the virus like potassium hydrochloride or by using lotions also used to treat warts.

Prevention is better than cure

Children are more susceptible to Molluscum. However with their strong immune system, they do not need to worry. In teens and adults, it is a sexually transmitted disease. It is more common in humid climatic conditions and crowded places. Few of the preventive measures include not sharing towels with other people. One should avoid any contact with skin lesions. Condoms should always be used when one is doubtful about the health of the sexual partner. People who use steam rooms and saunas such as gymnasts, wrestlers and others are very susceptible to this infectious disease. It is very important to be aware of the symptoms and seek help from a specialist when one notices such bumps on the skin.

Modern treatments

One should always seek help from the specialist, this helps curb the growth of the virus. Since advanced science has brought about many treatment methods from the best in the medical practice, victims have many options to choose from. It is better to treat the bumps when they are small in size since the scar is also minimal.

  1. My son started with molluscum after contact with his
cousin (who had it and we didn't know until it was too
late). At first it was mild and then what seemed like
overnight, it started to spread and the spots became
larger and more painful. I was desperate to find
something to help. We were told to let them run their
